Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are typically recommended for instances when a natural tooth needs reinforcement. If a tooth is severely cracked or fractured, it cannot function properly on its own. A dental crown will be installed over the natural tooth to provide strength and durability so you can continue to eat with confidence. Dental crowns are also often installed after a root canal procedure to preserve the remainder of the original tooth.
What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is an artificial cap that sits on top of your natural tooth and mimics the look, feel, and function of a natural tooth. Crowns can be made from porcelain, gold, acrylic resin, or a mix of these materials. Both porcelain and acrylic resin can be matched to your natural tooth colour, although porcelain can be less durable than acrylic resin. Whichever material you choose with the help of our dentists, with proper oral hygiene, your crown can last from several decades to a lifetime.
What to Expect from a Dental Crown Procedure
The first step in fitting a dental crown is to treat and clean the tooth. Once the tooth is prepared, our dentists will use the iTero scanner to create a 3D, digital impression of your mouth. A custom-made crown will be ordered, and you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown in the meantime. It generally takes 2-3 weeks for the custom crown to arrive. Once the new crown comes, our dentists will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent one, ensuring you have a comfortable fit and natural bite before your new one is cemented in place. The process requires a minimum of two appointments.
